The Roman theater - usually visible from the outside - will be open for free visits, attended by the staff from the Superintendency, for information and details on request.
The monument, located in a favorable position at the entrance of the city, lay on the side of the hill of S. Giusto, facing directly onto the sea.
It was founded in the Augustan or Julio-Claudian epoch (1st century AD), restored in the Trajan era by Q. Petronio Modesto and remained in use until late antiquity (when it also hosted gladiatorial games). During the Middle Ages its presence was canceled by the overlapping of buildings that partially reused its structures, however allowing its conservation: it was identified in 1814 by Pietro Nobile and brought to light in 1938, recovering a remarkable series of sculptures.
