Description

This conference of Prof. Malek (CNRS, France) is part of Fisics&Art against CO2, a project for the public engagement in science and technology promoted by the University of Udine and other partners, which includes an exhibition, conference and workshops to promote interest, knowledge and reflection on renewable energies. Focus of the conference is the future of solar energy.
Much progress has been made for the production of electricity from renewable sources over the last decades. But since most of our energy consumption is in form of thermal energy, we cannot get rid of the fossil fuels as long as we do not have thermal energy from renewable sources. In addition, there is no alternative to using solar energy for providing heat of homes and for industrial applications. At the time being, it seems that solar power plants make economic sense only in the deserts. We discuss whether solar energy can also be used at the northern latitudes such as Helsinki. If the laws of physics allow us to heat Nordic countries with solar energy, then our solutions may be used in any place of the world, whether it is in Africa or in Europe.
